Meet Nancy Brittain, MSW
1. Who do you enjoy counseling?
I enjoy working with couples, families, adults and adolescents. Helping people discover the strength, wisdom and solutions already present in their relationships and themselves is my passion. I enjoy working with people who want to strengthen relationship, communicate effectively, and to gain greater self-awareness and effectiveness, as well as heal from past hurt and trauma. I also like working with people struggling with substance abuse or wondering whether it might be a problem for them or their relationship.
I have a soft spot for counseling people who don’t really like counseling!
2. What kinds of counseling do you do?
I draw from a number of different theories in my counseling style, including Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Narrative therapy, and solution-focused therapy. Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy is an evidence-based model of helping couples find closeness, heal hurts and improve communication.
Regardless of theory or technique, at the heart of my work are a few core values:
A relational stance. People are wired to connect! Even when working with individuals, which I love, I am always conscious that we are relational beings.
Strengths-based. I think change happens when we recognize and play to our strengths. I honor my clients’ ability to discover their own solutions, and see my role as helping to guide them.
Experiential. While there is a lot of value in talking about our goals and what we would like to be different, I believe that when we are able to feel and experience something different, it creates more powerful and lasting change. That starts in the therapy room and extends into the world!
3. What’s it like to work with you?
My clients appreciate that I am down-to-earth and authentic. I bring a sense of humor to my practice, and genuinely connect with and care about my clients. While I have experience and expertise in helping clients discover their own solutions, I believe that you are the expert on you and / or your relationship, and that is reflected in my collaborative style. We are a team working together toward your goals.
4. What is your background?
I worked with adolescents, young adults, and their families through a wilderness therapy program in southern Colorado for many years before moving to Denver for graduate school. Since moving to the city, I have worked with couples, families, and adolescents, including families struggling with substance abuse. In graduate school I discovered my passion for working with couples and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT).
I received my Master’s in Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Denver, and completed a post-graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy with the Denver Family Institute. My B.A. is from Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
